Linux is Green Computing

True or False: Switching from a Windows-operated computer to a Linux-operated one could slash computer-generated e-waste levels by 50%. The answer is: TRUE

Here are some links that show why.

  1. CNN – True or False: E-Waste.
  2. Digg – Study Says Linux Slash E-waste levels by 50%. Contains the link above, but also has many interesting comments about it some not so in favor.
  3. Vertatique – Sustainable Computing.

There is a great deal of interesting information in these links.

Green links at Yahoo

Published by David Both under Environment

I just found this link to Yahoo green pages. There seems to be a lot of information about all aspects of being green.

http://green.yahoo.com/

The Living Green page has a lot of how-to information that looks like it can make it very easy for people to learn how to green up every aspect of living.

I am going to enjoy exploring this.

Yet Another Water Waster

2909 Hiking Trail

Private residence

This one is probably a simple mistake, but can we afford these simple mistakes? On our evening walk, my wife and I noticed a stream of water actively flowing down the driveway and into the street. I got pictures again. After knocking on the door with no answer, we turned off the outdoor faucet.

Although I did notice that they have a couple outdoor water features that were running. Since refilling those are illegal, perhaps we should not let these folks off so lightly. And perhaps they left the hose on after refilling these water features.

More Water Scofflaws

I cannot believe that some of these places are still watering.

I did not see them watering, but there were puddles of water in the parking lot and on the sidewalks. This place is just down the street from the one below and is probably owned or managed by the same company.

I have reported them to the City Manager and the head of Raleigh Public Utilities as well as the News and Observer. I would have copied the doctors office but once again there is no email address on their web site.

Centos Linux 5.1 Installation

Published by David Both under Linux

How-To_Forge has a very good tutorial that covers installation of a Centos 5.1 server. It discusses installation and configuration of the following services:

  • LAMP
  • Email
  • DNS
  • FTP
  • ISPConfig (A firewall Configurator and manager)

http://www.howtoforge.com/centos-5.1-server-lamp-email-dns-ftp-ispconfig

In case you do not know, Centos is downstream in the development chain from Red Hat. Fedora is the leading edge for Red Hat based distributions and most of the newest development appears in Fedora first. Red Hat takes the best and most stable of the Fedora packages and creates the Red Hat Enterprise distributions of Linux. Centos then takes the Red Hat Enterprise distributions and rebrands it for free distribution.

Centos is a very stable platform that has a relatively long release cycle time so your IT platform can be stable as well, with no need to be on a continuous upgrade cycle. Of course Red Hat provides the same advantages, but you would pay for Red Hat support.

I have also placed this link in the list of Links for Linux.
