Day 1 of the Obama “100,000 Doors” Campaign

Published by David Both under Politics

From Vickie:
Hey everyone!
Today, Saturday the 27th, was our first day of the “100,000 doors” campaign. We had a tremendous day and many thanks to Kevin and all the volunteers that canvassed. Here are the final numbers for today:

Doors knocked: 124
Contacts: 99
Not Home: 88
Wrong Address: 9
1′s: 63 (Obama) how awesome is that!!!!
2′s: 4 (lean toward Obama)
3′s: 12 (undecided)
4′s: 1
5′s: 8 (the other guy)
6′s: 1
I had the privilege of canvassing with a wonderful woman, Jane. I wanted to share a story with you. In my opinion, this is America and I loved it!
The first door we knocked on a older woman was sitting at her kitchen table, pajamas on, with about three kids of varying ages sitting on the floor watching a TV with a fan keeping them cool. She yelled out “who is it?” We said, “Hi, we are volunteers with the Barack Obama campaign”…without a moments hesitation she said, “oh you come on in!” She then proceeded to tell us about her current situation and her ‘state of the economy’…unsure how to pay for milk, eggs and prescriptions. So, after our wonderful real interaction she took us outside and said, “they call me granny here….you go to that house and you tell them ‘granny’ sent you and let her know I said it is ok to register to vote”…..SO, we did (who argues with granny??) and met another wonderful women in her 70s that has NEVER voted before and after talking about how important it is she vote, that HER voice be hear, not only did she register to vote, but she has agreed to let us pick her up and take her to the polls to her cast first ballot ever! It was moving and I felt so inspired today. Talking to real people, seeing hope in their eyes and listening to their very revealing stories. AWESOME day! I also found my canvass partner inspiring, Jane (please forgive me if you do not wish this to be shared) is a 77 year old volunteer that knocked on doors from 10-2 with me and was simply beautiful!!
I have shared before that I thought knocking on doors to be something I dreaded, but I must say today was great. I will use the analogy of exercising. You dread going, you don’t want to do it, but afterwards you feel wonderful! Canvassing is very much the same!!
SO, please consider taking some time to knock on some doors tomorrow if you have not already agreed.

Thanks to you all!!!
Vickie

Frigid Restaurants

Published by David Both under Rants

Why is it that so many of the restaurants in the Raleigh area are like meat lockers in the middle of summer? I bring this up because we are at the beach this week and the restaurants — and other stores — here seem to be able to maintain their temperatures in the comfort range for most humans. It is noticeable by comparison.

I do not understand how the owners of these places can be so stupid as to not realize how much money they can save and how many customers they can please just by adjusting the temperature up to a level that won’t freeze a penguin.

I have to ask most places we eat to turn up the temperature. Some places we don’t even go anymore because they are so cold. Is yours one of them? You will never know because you won’t ever see us again.

10 things you should know about John McCain (but probably don’t)

Published by David Both under Information,Politics

  1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has “evolved,” yet he’s continued to oppose key civil rights laws.1
  2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain “will make Cheney look like Gandhi.”2
  3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.3
  4. McCain opposes a woman’s right to choose. He said, “I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned.”4
  5. The Children’s Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children’s health care bill last year, then defended Bush’s veto of the bill.5
  6. He’s one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a “second job” and skip their vacations.6
  7. Many of McCain’s fellow Republican senators say he’s too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He’s erratic. He’s hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.”7
  8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates.8
  9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his “spiritual guide,” Rod Parsley, believes America’s founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a “false religion.” McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church “the Antichrist” and a “false cult.”9
  10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.10
John McCain is not who the Washington press corps makes him out to be. So send this link to your personal network! And if you want stay in the loop on MoveOn’s work to get the truth out about John McCain, sign up here: http://pol.moveon.org/mccaintruth/

John McCain is a Crook

Published by David Both under Politics

The Keating Five: One Crook went to Jail; the Other is Running for President.

John McCain was a member of the Keating Five, five Senators who tried to get the Feds to ignore Charles Keating’s crimes. Keating fraudulently used funds from his S&L for personal gain. McCain and four other Senators tried to help him get away with it.

Do you want another crook for our next president? I don’t.
