This is not a review, but just a look at some of the things I’ve noticed.

The One Thing

Really there’s only one thing I’ve noticed. That’s the fact that there’s really nothing to notice, and that’s what’s truly important.

For the user, there’s nothing noticeable except perhaps the background, and that’s only if you’re still using the default background.

My Xfce desktop hasn’t changed. The way my applications work hasn’t changed. My backup scripts and timers all work as they did before.

I still don’t get pop-ups imploring me to upgrade one thing or another. My Applications (Start) menu hasn’t changed and still doesn’t present me with advertisements trying to sell me software and services I don’t want. Fedora still doesn’t send telemetry somewhere that records everything I do or develops a targeted ad campaign unique to me. I still don’t have unwanted junk software that some idiots have decided to call AI, getting in my way while I try to work. My data is still mine and it’s still located only on my local storage devices which is the only place I want it.

But why?

Although I sometimes like to change things up, I want to do it when I want, not when a roomfull of marketing bozos want to force me to.

I do try different desktops — when I feel like it. I change my Xfce desktop around a bit — when I want to. I do install new software sometimes — when I want to.

I still have complete control of my computer and my data. And that’s the most important thing.

My impressions of Fedora 44 after a month of use.
