Learning to use Linux is now much easier than it used to be. However, for someone new to the system, it can still be challenging to figure out where to start. Here are some tips and tricks that can help new users find a smoother entry point into Linux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first step should be to choose a beginner-friendly distribution. That would be Linux Mint Cinnamon. The Cinnamon desktop is an easy transition for someone who is used to using Windows 10 or 11. It might be helpful to find someone in your community who could help you install Linux Mint on your computer. Jay LaCroix\u2019s \u201cLearnLinuxTV<\/a>\u201d has an excellent introduction<\/a> to Linux Mint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once your new system is installed, it\u2019s important to familiarize yourself with some basic housekeeping tasks. Start by learning how to connect your system to your local wired or wireless network. After establishing the connection, proceed to learn how to update your system. Next, find out how to connect to your printer. Finally, learn how to navigate your file system using a graphical interface. Introduce the terminal, gradually explaining that it is a powerful tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like to introduce new users to the Linux way of doing things. I explain that most, if not all, of the software that you can add to your system comes from trusted repositories that are regularly vetted to ensure that your system\u2019s security is never compromised. I like to show newcomers that Linux offers a permission-oriented file system that keeps user space separated from system space and that passwords are required to install new software. I explain that most configuration files are found in the \/etc <\/strong>directory and that they are in plain text that can be easily read and edited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I take time to introduce the new Linux user to some of the applications that come with their system that will help them to easily access the power of their system. One of the first applications I demonstrate is the Firefox<\/a> web browser, which comes standard on many Linux distributions. Most new folks use their computer to read email, read blogs and social media, and in many cases purchase retail items and, in some cases, connect to banks and other financial institutions. Many folks have used Microsoft Office, but few have heard of LibreOffice, which is standard on most Linux distributions. I show new users how to easily personalize LibreOffice to do the work they expect from a complete solution for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation tools. Some folks have files from older applications that could not be read on their old system but will be easily accessed with LibreOffice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I show them how to access the software manager so they can easily install other applications that might interest them. I am quick to recommend GnuCash<\/a> as a great application for managing personal and business finances. Other folks might be interested in desktop games like chess and solitaire. I can also demonstrate how to install that software. I recommend installing tool software like Gimp<\/a> and Inkscape<\/a> and suggest how they could be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, I show them how they can easily back up their system with the built-in Mint backup tool or how to back up their entire system with the included Timeshift tool. I point new users to the excellent Linux Mint documentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, embarking on a journey with Linux can be an enriching experience, especially when approached with the right guidance and resources. By starting with a user-friendly distribution like Linux Mint and familiarizing themselves with essential tasks and applications, new users can build confidence and competence in navigating their new operating system.
