I’ve been enjoying the Brave browser lately. It’s refreshing not to be bothered by annoying pop-ups and to know that my browser is blocking trackers and ads. I’ve also appreciated using Brave’s Leo AI for research. However, when I opened a Brave session today, I encountered several persistent pop-up warnings indicating a profile error. After closing multiple warnings, I was eventually able to use the browser as I had before, but this new issue left me confused. I wanted to know how to resolve this error. I did some internet searches, and some sources suggested uninstalling Brave from the command line. But what if you are running Brave as a Flatpak?

My Brave installation was from Flatpak. How could I get rid of this annoying error message? One search suggested looking at the .config file in my home directory. I had to open the Nemo file browser on my Linux Mint Cinnamon desktop and turn on the option to “Show Hidden Files.” There were no references to Brave there. Eventually, I happened upon a search that led me to the solution. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Brave flatpak application, but the error persisted. The solution lies inside the .var folder in my home directory. I used the file browser to open the .var folder. Inside the .var folder is another folder called app that contains folders of all the Flatpak apps on my system. I deleted the folder com.brave.Browser and restarted Brave.
In conclusion, encountering a profile error in the Brave browser can be frustrating, but it can be resolved with the right steps. If you face similar challenges in the future, keep in mind that a thorough exploration of your system’s file structure can often lead to a solution.
